Airports revamp: Meet on March 22

New Delhi , March 16

The tripartite committee formed to look into the proposals for modernisation of airports by the Airports Authority of India and employee-related issues will meet again on March 22.

"We have sought certain clarifications from the government. We have decided to meet again on March 22," said Mr M.K. Ghoshal, Joint Convenor, AAI Workers Union, after the committee's first meeting. The agitation's aim was not to seek job protection for AAI employees after the two metro airports are handed over to the private sector, said Mr Ghoshal. The government has already shortlisted a consortium headed by the GMR group to modernise Delhi airport while a GVK-led consortium will undertake development of Mumbai airport.

At Thursday's meeting the AAI employees raised issues relating to modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports and wanted to know why AAI was not competent to undertake the job. The committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Airports Authority of India and the AAI Joint Workers Forum.

At the meeting, government officials explained that the government plans to modernise several airports around the country and not just those in the metros.

The meeting was held after the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Mr Prakash Karat wrote to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to put in abeyance the decision to hand over Delhi and Mumbai airports to private parties till the report of the committee was ready.
