Trade & Labour Unions States - Kerala Kochi port union calls off strike V. Sajeev Kumar
The Cochin Port Staff Association called off its two-day strike on Friday following a conciliation meeting between the port management and a representative of the union in the presence of the Regional Labour Commissioner. The management, in a statement issued at Kochi, said that the union had regretted its conduct and offered to withdraw the strike `unconditionally', and the port, on its part, the suspension orders. The days of strike will be treated as dies-non and the port will, however, continue its policy of taking strict action to curb indiscipline, the statement added.
Stress on work culture
The management said that it had conducted several meetings with the unions over the last few months requesting them to improve the work culture and discipline, especially in the light of ambitious development projects in the offing. "If we are to attract investment from outside, it is important that we present a businesslike culture and not continue with outdated practices of trade unionism and unruly behaviour", the management said.
Educating unions
However, a section of the unions has been insisting on unfettered and unlimited rights to be above all laws and regulations. The management has been extremely tolerant and trying to educate the unions to act responsibly so that the image of the port does not suffer, the statement added. Meanwhile, the Cochin Port Employees Organisation belonging to CITU has served a notice for an indefinite strike from March 31 against the anti-labour action of the port management, banning trade union rights and taking vindictive actions against leaders and activists.
