Bombay Dyeing to set up new facility in Pune

Bombay Dyeing is setting up a new manufacturing facility in Ranjangaon near Pune.

Mr Aloke Banerjee, Head of Domestic Sales, told presspersons that the bhoomipoojan of the new plant in Ranjangaon has been completed and the plant would become operational by May 2007. The facility would be spread over four lakh sq ft and is taking in an investment of Rs 250 crore.

He said that with this plant becoming operational, the existing facility at Worli in Mumbai would be phased out.

The Worli plant currently produces a lakh metres of cloth every day and the new plant would have a capacity to roll out 1.5 lakh metres of cloth every day.

He said the new facility would have all processes which included weaving, spinning, processing and would currently cater to the bedsheets and towel range. The plant is expected to cater to both the domestic and the export markets for this range, he said.

The new plant would be fully automated and would require lesser personnel to handle it. He did not, however, divulge the exact number of employees who would be recruited.

VRS offer

Asked about the employees at the Worli plant, Mr Banerjee said the voluntary retirement scheme has already been offered to its 470 plus employees and added that everybody had opted for its. The financial details were being worked out.

Sarees phased out

Mr Banerjee commenting on the `once famous Bombay Dyeing' sarees said that that segment is already being phased out. These would be produced only on demand or would be `made to order' sales. This was being phased out as it contributed only to about two to three per cent to its total turnover.

The other segment that is also being phased out is the furnishings segment, whose contribution was again about three to four per cent, he said.

40 new showrooms

Mr Banerjee, who was here for the inauguration of the new look Bombay Dyeing Showroom, said the company is planning to rollout about 40 new bed and bath showrooms across the country in the A and B class cities.

The company is also actively in discussion with Shoppers Stop and Lifestyle stores to exhibit their bed and bath segment in their malls.

Mr Banerjee said in Pune, Girisons Distributors, which have been associated with the company for the past 40 years, has given its showroom the new look and would have on display the latest bed and bath collection.

He said that its readymade apparel brands, Proline and Vivaldi would also be sold out of this new showroom. Girisons had recorded a turnover of Rs 35 crore for the last fiscal and have a network of 11 stores in Maharashtra.

Plans are also on the anvil for setting up four new stores in the State of which two would be in Mumbai, one each in Pune and Aurangabad.

He added that Aurangabad would also be having a new bed and bath format showroom soon.
