New Projects Industry & Economy - Environment Government - Policy States - Kerala Environmental nod for KRL's expansion plan Our Bureau
Kochi , March 20 The Rs 2,000-crore expansion-cum-modernisation plan of Kochi Refineries Ltd has been cleared by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The project, which is to be executed in the refinery's existing facilities, envisages capacity expansion from the current level of 7.5 to 9.5 mt crude throughput per annum. The modernisation component involves upgrading the fuels to Euro III compliance levels - reducing sulphur in motor spirit to 150 ppm and that of high-speed diesel to 350 ppm. The refinery has already complied with the Auto Fuel Policy of the Union Government to reduce sulphur in motor spirit and diesel to 500 ppm, the BS II standard by last year. The project facilities consist of a continuous catalytic regeneration reformer unit, a VGO-HDS unit, revamp of existing crude unit II and the addition of a sulphur recovery unit. The sulphur recovery unit is expected to reduce atmospheric pollution. In order to abide by the latest environmental guidelines, the project will create an effluent treatment plant for the wastewater generated during the process. The detailed feasibility report has been prepared and pre-project activities such as selection of the project management consultant, tendering activities for survey and soil investigation have already commenced. The investment approval is likely to be obtained by April 2006.
