Displacement due to construction of port

Visakhapatnam , March 22

Fisherfolk facing displacement at Gangavaram village due to the ongoing construction of a private port staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Wednesday, demanding construction of a fishing jetty and a proper rehabilitation package.

The port is being constructed by a private consortium led by the D.V.S. Raju & Company.

Two major fishing villages - Dibbapalem and Gangavaram - are affected on account of the construction of the port. A tripartite agreement has been signed by the port authorities, Dibbapalem fishermen and the Government on rehabilitation. But there has been no such agreement with Gangavaram fishermen.

Rehabilitation package

The fishermen from Gangavaram and some smaller villages in the vicinity have been agitating for sometime now seeking a proper rehabilitation package and construction of a fishing jetty at Nallamaramma Patalu. They also want compensation of Rs 5 lakh for each displaced family.

If for any reason it is not possible to construct the fishing jetty at Nallamaramma Patalu, demand the fisherfolk, the residents of Gangavaram, Jalaripallepalem, Chinapallepalem and Pedapallepalem should be rehabilitated. In the survey conducted by the Government, 3,600 fishermen in these villages should be included and compensated.

The Gangavaram fisherfolk also seek a tripartite agreement. The representatives of the CPM and other political parties, supporting the demands of the fisherfolk, also participated in the demonstration.
