Mangalore , March 22

The Corporation Bank's Centenary Public Library, which was dedicated to the people of Mangalore by the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, on March 12, will be fully operational from April 1.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday at the premises of the hi-tech library, Mr A. Mohan Rao, General Manager of the bank, said, "The objective to open a library in Mangalore was to kindle the spark of learning to the uninitiated and provide opportunities to acquire greater knowledge to all book lovers in Mangalore."

Members can make full use of the library from April 1, he said.

The library has a collection of nearly 4,000 books and 400 CDs and DVDs.

These numbers will be increased in the days to come. In this regard, the library is seeking feedback from educational institutions in the region regarding selection of books.

On-line facilities

Stating that the bank officials visited various libraries across the country before setting up a library in Mangalore, Mr Rao said the library provides all modern facilities such as video-conferencing and Internet.

Members also have access to more than 2,000 full-text e-journals and e-books at the library.

Keeping in view the demands of the physically challenged, special arrangements have been made for them.

Mr Rao said the library has a hall for activities such as book release and lecture sessions involving authors.

To access the books at the reference and lending sections, one has to become a member by paying an annual fee of Rs 600.

Discount for students

However, a 50-per cent discount is offered to students pursuing college and higher education.

Enrolment as a member is not required to use the newspaper and periodical section, Mr Rao said.

On monetary allocation to the library for the coming fiscal, he said this would be discussed at the bank's next board meeting.
