Trends Variety - Entertainment & Leisure Reliance WebWorld clocks 10,000 gaming hours a day Kripa Raman
Mumbai , March 23 Reliance WebWorld the country-wide chain of communication centres of the Reliance Communications group is doing a brisk business in gaming, clocking an average of 10,000 hours every day. At Rs 40 per hour of play, this yields a revenue of Rs 4 lakh a day. It has also acquired 6-lakh prepaid customers for making use of its communication centres, said Mr Sunil Buch, Head of Reliance WebStore Ltd that runs the Reliance WebWorld chain.
Popular in smaller towns
Gaming is turning out to be extremely popular, not just in the cities but also in the smaller towns where there is little evening entertainment for young people, said Mr Buch. WebWorld stores are open at 10 in the morning and close at 10 by night. There are instances of select requests for the stores to be kept open for all-night gaming, he said. Reliance WebWorlds number 240 and are located in 105 cities. Apart from gaming, the customers have facilities for e-mailing, Internet chat and for work (which could range from filing of reports to multi-location corporate sales conferences which often happen through WebWorld video conferencing facilities). Some of the WebWorlds function like coffee shops as well. And little attractions, such as getting a photograph of one's choice printed on a coffee mug, are also being offered here.
Value-added services
In the case of Reliance Infocomm's telephony services, Value-Added Services (VAS) or non-voice services currently account for about 10 per cent of all traffic and roughly 10 per cent of revenues as well, said Mr Mahesh Prasad, President, Reliance Infocomm. The company is using as benchmark the highest VAS ratio of 20-25 per cent that some companies in the world have achieved, said another official with the company.
