Value addition will animate industry

Mumbai, March 24

India is a long way from becoming an animation hub but the industry is nevertheless growing fast, speakers at FICCI-Frames 2006 said.

The session on animation began with a debate on whether India was a hub for the animation industry and concluded that it was not.

In terms of outsourced work, South Korea was way ahead of India and for original content creation it is "a long winding road", Mr Taapas Chakravorti, Managing Director, DQ Entertainment, said. English-speaking ability and low labour costs in India do help, but most of the original animation work still comes from the US west coast, said Mr Anthony Boucher, Cinnamon Entertainment, UK.

He spoke of universal appeal in stories for animated work, a point corroborated by Mr Vincent Edwards, Director, Spiderman. "The bottomline is that content has to be entertaining. To create a globally recognised brand you need to have universal appeal," Mr Edwards said.
