The Hindu Business Line : Civil works to be completed at Mangalore runway soon

Civil works at the new runway at Mangalore airport will be completed by March 31. Mr M.R. Vasudeva, Airport Director, Mangalore, told this to Mr B. Janardhan Poojary, MP and Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Civil Aviation, during the latter's visit to the airport here on Thursday.

Mr Vasudeva said that concreting of the 2.4-km-long second runway had been completed, and the civil works related to the runway will be completed by this month-end.

Night-landing facility for aircraft will be provided at the airport soon after that, he said.

Mr Poojary said the entire stretch of the second runway at Mangalore airport is fully concreted.

On the construction of the second terminal building, he said the Union Government wanted an international standard terminal building at the airport. Stating that 55 acres of land was needed for this purpose, Mr Poojary urged the State Government to expedite the work on land acquisition by paying adequate compensation to the families there. With huge investments expected in various sectors in Mangalore, a new terminal building with international standards will help attract investors.

Efforts were on to operate flights to West Asian countries, and the first flight is likely to be operated to Sharjah soon. Operation of international flights from Mangalore will help passengers in coastal Karnataka and a part of northern Kerala, Mr Poojary added.
