Mumbai , March 25

As part of its programme to build and strengthen ties with the Indian business community, universities and policymakers in the country, Harvard Business School (HBS) has opened a new India Research Center (IRC) in Mumbai.

The centre will focus on case studies on Indian companies and India's global strategies with a view to deepening the knowledge base for the School's management programmes. The IRC is part of the HBS strategy to set up institutions of this kind in countries around the world to act as what its Executive Director, Mr Ajoy Mookherjee, calls `facilitators' of the school's faculty research.

`Not a teaching centre'

The IRC in Mumbai will be the school's sixth research centre after one each in California, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Tokyo and Paris. Prof Richard Victor, Senior Associate Dean, Faculty Chair for Asia at HBS, clarified that the IRC would not be a teaching centre.

The Senior Associate Dean for International Development, Prof Krishna Palepu, said the IRC was meant to enable the HBS faculty learn from the Indian economy and companies and thereby enrich the school's teaching programmes. The HBS research centres have been funded through contributions from local alumni. The IRC will be housed in Mahindra Towers at Worli.
