Coconut meet stresses on strengthening breeding work

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , March 26

The perceptible increase in the demand for coconut seedlings for large-scale planting, particularly in the post-tsunami period, has forced palm researchers to take stock of the research projects undertaken in this area and plan research strategies for the forthcoming years.

At the two-day review conference on palm which concluded here on Friday, emphasis was largely on strengthening the breeding work to increase the coconut yield potential as also the oil content.

The scientists noted that the area and production of coconut in the State had doubled over the last five decades to 28 per cent, with a production of 2,374 million nuts from about 4,07,000 hectares.

The TNAU Vice Chancellor, Dr C. Ramasamy, suggested the need for submission of a policy note to the Government "outlining a strategy for enabling good planting materials to reach farmers."
