The Centre plans to create additional power generation capacity of 67,000 mw each during the XI Plan (2007-2012) and XII Plan (2012-2017) periods by initiating projects across various States, including ultra mega projects each with 4,000 mw capacity.
As per the long-term plan, by 2017 no area in the country will face power shortage. The Government has found the Krishnapatnam site suitable for the proposed ultra mega project. According to the plan, Krishnapatnam, which has a port, would have 8,000 mw additional capacity.
Mr R.K. Jain, member of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), said that the additional capacity would increase the installed capacity to 2.58 lakh mw.
The new projects would come up in both the public and private sectors. Of the 67,000 mw planned, 10,000 mw would constitute thermal power, 3,000 mw nuclear power and the rest, natural gas and hydel power.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr Jain said an ideal demand-supply match would be achieved by 2017, with a 5 per cent spinning reserve, which is the capacity reserved to meet exigencies.
Currently, the country's installed capacity is about 1.24 lakh mw but of this only 80 per cent is available for generation at a given time. This results in shortages at one stage or the other.
