Harrisons Malayalam bags Pak tea order

Our Bureau

Bangalore , March 28

Harrisons Malayalam, a south Indian plantation company, has bagged an order to export three million kg (mkg) of tea to Pakistan.

"It's a significant breakthrough," said Mr Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Commerce, adding that the Commerce Secretary was at present in that country to negotiate for more orders. Pakistan is the second largest import of tea.

India, the largest producer of tea, has a miniscule share in the Pakistani market, which consumes about 140 mkg annually. Pakistan imports tea from Kenya and Sri Lanka. Since, drought has impacted the Kenyan output this year, a window of opportunity had opened up in Pakistan for the Indian teas, he said.
