Outlook Volvo India plans mining truck exports to Indonesia, Vietnam Our Bureau
Chennai , March 29 Volvo India is evaluating the possibility of exporting mining trucks it produces at its plant near Bangalore to Indonesia and Vietnam. A decision on this is expected in the next few weeks, according to Mr Eric Leblanc, Managing Director, Volvo India Pvt Ltd. Last year, Volvo India exported 150 units of its tipper truck FM 12 to Korea. Volvo is looking at its option to export to Korea this year too. However, a decision on this is expected only in the second half of the year, according to Mr Leblanc. This was because there was a product change and the company was studying the costing aspects before finalising its export strategy, he said.
Truck, bus market good
In an informal chat with newspersons, Mr Leblanc said there was a good growth in heavy-duty vehicles, as more users were switching over from medium duty to heavy-duty vehicles. The company expected to do better than the industry growth, he said without going into any numbers for the year. In 2005, Volvo India sold 600 trucks and 400 buses. Mr Leblanc was here in connection with a press conference to announce the winners of the Volvo Adventure Project Award 2006, in which there were nearly 50 schools competing. TVS HS School, Madurai, bagged the first prize for its project on "Wastage of drinking water." The school's team will get an all expenses paid trip to attend the global finals of the Volvo Young Environmentalists Award in Goteburg, Sweden. Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School, Chennai, with its project "Milestones in Chennai's waste management" and team Plastics Assassins for its project promoting eco-friendly bags shared the second prize, according to a Volvo India press release. Both these teams will receive cash grants in support of their projects.
