Power Manmohan to discuss power sector reforms with CMs Our Bureau
Powering growth Meeting with CMs likely to be held in June after Assembly elections. The Barh Transmission System will transfer power from NTPC's Barh generation project to the beneficiaries in eastern, northern and western regions.
New Delhi , March 29 The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, would shortly convene a meeting of chief ministers for evolving a political consensus on power sector reforms. "I know that we need to do a lot in the power sector to provide electricity to all and at affordable rates. I am convening a conference of all State Chief Ministers to form a political consensus," he said, after launching work on the Rs 3,780-crore Barh Transmission System to be developed by Powergrid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL). The Union Power Minister, Mr Sushil Kumar Shinde, said the conference of chief ministers could be held after the Assembly elections in various States get over. He said this was likely around the first week of June. Work on Barh Transmission System was launched in the presence of the former Prime Minister, Mr Chandra Sekhar, who represents the Ballia Lok Sabha constituency, and the UPA chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi. The Barh Transmission System has been planned to transfer power from NTPC Ltd's Barh generation project to the beneficiaries in eastern, northern and western regions. Addressing the gathering, Ms Sonia Gandhi expressed concern over the lack of economic development in eastern Uttar Pradesh and other smaller towns and exuded confidence that such projects would bridge the gap. She said a lot more had to be done in turning around the country's power sector. Providing electricity to all by 2012 is a big challenge and overcoming this would make India, the world's largest democracy, a global economic power, she said.
