Logistics - Modernisation

For the long-haul

The drama over the modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports may no longer grab headlines, but the parties involved appear to be settling down for a long haul before a decision from the courts is available. While the Delhi High Court has adjourned hearings on the petition filed by Anil Ambani-owned Reliance group against the award of the contracts, a guessing game is on among the other bidders on whether the matter would go up to Supreme Court in case of a verdict against Reliance. But more than the private parties involved, it is the Civil Aviation Ministry that is anxious to see the end of the matter so that the process of modernisation of the airports can begin at the earliest. The Ministry's anxiety is more in the case of the Delhi airport as it has a sharp deadline to meet — 2010 when the Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held in the capital. The new airport has to be up and going at least a year before the games begin so that glitches are sorted out before guests start trooping in.
