Kolkata set to clock 15% growth in traffic

Our Bureau

Kolkata , March 30

Kolkata port is all set to end the current fiscal with a total traffic of 53 million tonnes (mt) compared to 46.21 mt in 2004-05, registering a growth of about 15 per cent. Till yesterday, the figure was 52.3 mt.

Dockwise, it is estimated that Haldia dock will end with a traffic figure of over 42 mt and Kolkata Dock System (KDS) around 10.7 mt. Till yesterday, the corresponding figures were 41.7 mt and 10.6 mt respectively. In 2004-05, the throughputs at Haldia dock were 36.26 mt while that of KDS 9.95 mt.

In the current fiscal, the throughputs of iron ore, coking coal, thermal coal, and crude and petroleum products at Haldia posted impressive growth.

At KDS, the throughput would have been higher but for the shortfall in crude lighterage at the sandheads. The shortfall is estimated at 0.5 mt.

PARADIP

Paradip is likely to miss the traffic target for 2005-06 by a whisker, according to port sources. The current year's traffic volume is likely to be 33.1 mt compared to the target of 33.4 mt. In 2004-05, the port handled 30.1 mt. In other words, the port hopes to achieve about 10 per cent growth in traffic this year.
