Vizag port exceeds target

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , March 31

The Visakhapatnam Port Trust has exceeded the target of 55.15 million tonnes set by the Union Shipping Ministry and by Saturday morning the throughput may touch 55.75 million tonnes, according to Mr K. Ratna Kishore, the Chairman.

"In fact, we achieved the target two days ago. It is a heartening achievement made possible by the combined efforts of the dock workers, port employees, the shippers, stevedores and all others. For the first time in the history of Indian ports, the VPT crossed the 50-mt mark last year. The Ministry set us a steep target, but we could achieve it this year too," he said.

There was a slight shortfall of 3.5 lakh tonnes or so as far as iron ore was concerned, but it did not make much of an impact on the overall performance of the port, he said. The port could also get some transhipment cargo of 5 lakh tonnes during March, enabling it to achieve the target comfortably, he said.
