To widen reach, offer value-added services

Coimbatore , March 31

Hutchison Essar that had recently taken over BPL Mobile, a cellular phone service provider in Tamil Nadu circle, has re-branded it as Hutch.

The company, which had expanded the Hutch network in Tamil Nadu circle since the takeover a few weeks ago, has said that it would roll out value-added services such as GPRS and Hutch Mail. Mr Kumar Ramanathan, Chief Executive Officer, Hutchison Essar South Ltd, Chennai, told presspersons here that the brand has assumed a national foot print having its presence in 16 circles with a customer base of over 14.5 million and accounting for nearly 17 per cent market share in the mobile telephony industry in the country.

If the share of the Mumbai circle is added to it, the percentage would move up to 18 per cent, making Hutch the third largest operator in the country. Much of this growth has come through the acquisition route.

He said the Tamil Nadu market was important for his company and the state ranks among the top in terms of economic indices in the country. Hutch's network in Tamil Nadu has now been extended to nearly 210 towns.
