NEW ATTITUDE: Mr M. Nageswaran, GM, IOC, Chennai, speaking to students of Adhiparasakthi Engineering College, Melmaruvathur.
Chennai , March 31 What made Keshubhai Patel of Nirma, who gave the MNCs a run for their money, the man he is? In one word: attitude. "Attitude is everything. Change your attitude and that will change your life for the better," said Mr M. Nageswaran, GM (Regional Services), Indian Oil Corporation, Chennai, to the MBA & MCA students of Adhiparasakthi Engineering College, Melmaruvathur, in his talk after inaugurating the BL Club. This former Managing Director of Lanka IOC was in his elements while speaking to the students. To the students, whose roots are in rural areas, he gave a reality check. He told them, firmly, "It is only your attitude that can help you achieve greater heights." Taking the Nirma example again, he said it was wrong to think that there was no competition and, therefore, the detergent company was able to grow. This is wrong, he said, and added that when Keshubhai Patel started Nirma, P&G and HLL were already there. Similarly, when Bill Gates started Microsoft, IBM, Dell and Apple were already there. "Our in-built attitude is negativism. We never fight. We think we are born failures. We Indians do not have a winning attitude, particularly as a team. Many Indians have appeared in the Wisden book of world cricket. But Australians who have fewer appearances than Indians have one more test than India," said Mr Nageswaran. Life's tie-breaker is attitude, he said. Attitude is by choice not by chance. When all are equally qualified, it is attitude that makes the difference, he added. Before concluding he listed seven winning strategies: Passion, belief in your self, strategies, clarity of moral and ethical values, abundance of energy, bonding power and mastery in communication. Apart from 200 students present at the talk, also present were Dr P. Purushothama Raj, Director, Dr V. Ilangovan, Principal and Mr R. Senapathi, HoD, MBA department of the college.
