Constituency development

Welcome initiative
With each MP getting Rs 2 crore a year under the MPLADS programme, the range of developmental projects that can be supported is large. Hence, an IT-based solution that gives a good idea of the way the money is being spent and projects progressing, could be a welcome initiative, feel IT experts.

Hyderabad , March 31

In an interesting application of information technology, a politician in Andhra Pradesh is utilising a software to get an overall perspective of his constituency and find solutions to develop it.

Mr L. Rajagopal, an industrialist-turned-politician, who represents the Vijayawada Lok Sabha seat, has found IT useful in getting closer to the realities in the villages that dot his constituency.

He has floated a socio-economic trust named GLAD, whose main objective is to develop Vijayawada and the nearby villages. It is managed by a group of professionals.

The former Chairman of the Lanco Group of Industries says he is able to keep track of the activities, the issues and developments in his constituency through a software provided by Vortex Technologies, called SofTrack.net.Mr Rajagopal said when he became an MP in 2004 and toured most of the villages in his constituency he did not find even a single IT kiosk. The software provides him easy access and can be run both over a local area network (LAN) and the Internet.

The GLAD has built databases of various facets of the constituency, the development projects, the demands of the people, major pending issues and their status. With each MP getting Rs 2 crore a year under the MPLADS programme, the range of developmental projects that can be supported is large. Hence, an IT-based solution that gives a good idea of the way the money is being spent and projects progressing, could be a welcome initiative, feel IT experts.
