`Wealth must be shared through community service'

New Delhi , March 31

There's pride in becoming a wealthy country... and when wealth is created, it must be shared. That in turn is done through community service, said the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, here on Friday.

Speaking at the Lakshmipat Singhania-IIM Lucknow National Leadership Awards 2005 ceremony, Mr Chidambaram said that in order to create wealth and be successful, we must be best in whatever we do.

Presenting the award to Dr N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor, Infosys Technologies Ltd, for leadership in the business category, he supported entrepreneurship and said, "Dr Murthy was a new kid on the block 15 years ago. We have more kids on the block coming and that is the way it should be."

Mr Chidambaram also presented awards to Mr Rajendra Singh for community leadership for his work in water conservation in Rajasthan and to Prof C.N.R. Rao, Honorary President, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, for leadership in the Science and Technology category.

Young leaders award

Ms Mallika Srinivasan, Mr Shirish B Purhoit and Dr Rajesh Kumar were also presented the `Young Leaders Award" for leadership in the business, science and technology and community service categories, respectively.Mr Hari Shankar Singhania, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIM-Lucknow, in his welcome address, "Exceptional and committed visionary leaders in every field will be needed to make India a truly developed nation, lead the world and usher in an era of prosperity and opportunity to each and every individual of our country."

The Lakshmipat Singhania-IIM Lucknow National Leadership Awards were conceived to honour exceptional individuals who have contributed consistently to the betterment of thecountry through pursuit of excellence. The award consists of a trophy and a citation.
