Announcements Maharashtra Scooters: No more geared vehicles Our Bureau
Pune , March 31 Maharashtra Scooters today informed the BSE that it has completed production of CBU scooters from available CKD (completely knocked down) packs. The company also said that it would cease production of geared scooters form April 2006 since CKD packs are not available, as Baja Auto Ltd has stopped production of geared scooters. Speaking to Business Line, Mr Sanjiv Bajaj, Executive Director of Bajaj Auto Ltd, has said that the company would completely stop production of the old geared scooters, the famed Chetak and Super. Super, it may be recalled, has not been in the market for quite some time. Mr Bajaj said that the company had been producing about 3,000 Chetaks few months back and had been witnessing a gradual reduction in production as also sales. It has about 2,450 finished units in its closing stock for the fiscal ended March 31, 2006 and is estimating to complete the sales within a couple of months. On the workforce in Maharashtra Scooters, Mr Bajaj said that options were being discussed among the management and a decision is expected soon. The company currently has about 600 staff on its payroll. On whether a voluntary retirement scheme would be offered to them, he said that the company had kept all options open. Mr Bajaj also said that currently the facility was producing pressure die-casting dies, which are used in two-wheeler manufacturing. He added that it contributed to about 15 per cent of the total turnover last fiscal.
