New Delhi, April 1

The Government has released 42 lakh tonnes (lt) sugar for sale in open markets for the April to June quarter, eight lt more than the free sale quota during the same period a year ago. For April, it has fixed the free sale quota at 14.5 lt. This quantity has to be sold within the month and any unsold quantity at the month-end would be converted into levy sugar, it added. "If sugar prices show any abnormal, increasing trend, additional releases shall be made," it said in a release. It added that the volume to be released should be enough to rein in prices.
