Transport corridors

The Bangladesh Government has identified nearly 20 strategic transport corridors covering rail, road and river routes to facilitate trade with India while the political decision whether or not to provide India with transit and transshipment facilities remains pending. The proposed routes include the crossing points of Petrapole/Benapole to Jessore; Khulna and Dhaka with extensions to Mongla and Chittagong ports; the road from Mogulghat to Bulibari facilitating movement to Bhutan; the road from Chittagong to Akhaura, and from Akhaura to Sylhet; the road along the Phulbari corridor in the north leading to Nepal; approach roads to several ports; the Rajmangal-Chalna-Mongla-Chandpur, Aricha-Bahadurabad and Chilmari, and the rail link from Darshana to Iswardi to Jamuna Bridge and rail links to Benapole, Biral, Rohanpur and Mogulghat. An ADB study on this is likely to start in June. According to reports in Bangladesh newspapers, the country will be able to attract sizeable foreign investments in infrastructure once it offers transport corridors to India, Bhutan and Nepal. Meanwhile, the Burimari dry port, serving trade with India, Nepal and Bhutan, is believed to be languishing due to obsolete infrastructure.
