A `pasteurising' plant for the famous Palani `Panchamirtham' is coming up at the foothills of this temple town of Palani on an estimated outlay of Rs 40 lakh.
The Sri Dhandayudhapani Temple Trust is initiating the proposed project.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr S.V. Balasubramaniam, said the unit would commence production within the next four to five months. Besides increasing the shelf life of the Panchamirtham to about a year from 15-days at present, the preparation, he said would be automated and under more hygienic conditions.
Prepared mainly out of bananas, khandasari sugar, dates, sugar candy and honey, this mix is as renowned as the `laddus' offered to devotees at the Tirupathi temple.
Over 7 lakh devotees throng this temple every month. The number swells during festive seasons.
Temple sources say that the daily off-take of the Panchamirtham is close to 3,500 kg and the volumes more than double on festival days.
The trust has contracted with the growers of `hill banana' in and around Palani and Kodai Hills for sourcing the supplies. The daily supplies have in the last two years swelled to 3,000 kg and more and more area is being brought under hill banana cultivation.
