Our Bureau

Mumbai , April 2

Planting of Bollgard cotton (a genetically modified cottonseed) in the 2005 season has resulted in yield and revenue benefits to a large number of farmers across the country, a survey has concluded.

4,799 farmers across 31 cotton growing districts covering nine States were contacted for the survey sponsored by the industry and conducted by IMRB International.

20 hybrids of Bollgard were planted in the 2005 season and the total acreage under Bt cotton was an estimated 31 lakh acres. Farmers are estimated to have earned additional income of Rs 2,100 crore this season.

In terms of expenditure on pesticide sprays, cotton growers spent a fourth less on Bollgard cotton (Rs 1,582 per acre) versus Rs 2,133 for conventional cotton. Yield increased to 10.7 quintal per acre in case of Bollgard cotton compared with 6.54 quintals per acre of conventional cotton.

Mahyco Monsanto Biotech (India) Ltd has co-licensing agreements with a number of Indian cottonseed companies to supply Bollgard.
