Rural Development States - Karnataka Development schemes' funds to be released on quarterly basis Our Bureau
Boosting growth Apart from improving infrastructure in Bangalore, Karnataka Budget has made proposals to provide easy connectivity to major urban centres such as Mangalore, Mysore, Shimoga and Gulbarga.
Belthangady (D.K. District) , April 2 The Karnataka Government - which will review the implementation of the developmental programmes announced by it in the budget, every quarter - will release amount required for them in that quarter itself. In an informal chat with presspersons here on Sunday on the sidelines of the inauguration of a resource centre for SGSY (Swarnajayanti Grameen Swarojgar Yojana) beneficiaries, Mr B.S. Yediyurappa, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister, said that the money required for the implementation of various developmental programmes would be released on quarterly basis rather than on annual basis. Mr Yediyurappa said that he recently conducted a meeting with the top officials of the Government to review the performance of various developmental programmes. Such meetings will be continued in future too. The Government has given importance for rural development and women's empowerment in the budget. Meanwhile, importance has also been given to information technology and biotechnology sectors. Apart from improving infrastructure in Bangalore, Karnataka Budget has made proposals to provide easy connectivity to major urban centres such as Mangalore, Mysore, Shimoga and Gulbarga. The Government has also taken steps to release the subsidy of Rs 85 crore to small-scale industries sector, he said.
Farm ponds
Later inaugurating a resource centre - which has been set up by SKDRDP (Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project) for the benefit of SGSY beneficiaries - Mr Yediyurappa said that the Government would set up 50,000 farm ponds to arrest the depletion of water table in rural areas. Rainwater harvesting will be given importance in those farm ponds. To provide marketing facilities for the products manufactured by women's self-help groups (SHGs) in the State, the Government will set up buildings in every district at a cost of Rs 10 lakh each. Dr L.H. Manjunath, SKDRDP Executive Director, said that the SGSY resource centre would provide information to the self-employed persons in the State. The SGSY programme wants to make 11,175 families below poverty line (BPL) in Dakshina Kannada self-reliant through various activities. Apart from providing work to these BPL families, the programme will market the products prepared by them under the `Siri' brand name, he added. The SKDRDP President, Dr D. Veerendra Heggade, presided over the function.
