Mangalore , April 1

The Karnataka Cashew Manufacturers' Association (KCMA) will organise a cashew festival - `Kaju Fest' - in Bangalore from April 21 to 24 to mark the valedictory of its golden jubilee celebrations.

According to the KCMA President, Mr K. Prakash Rao, over 30,000 people in Bangalore are likely to attend Kaju Fest. The main objective of the festival is to make people aware of the various nutritional aspects of cashew. Terming it as a zero cholesterol nut, he said the fest would help kick-start generic promotion of cashew and develop a model for such promotion in every major city.

To promote the use of cashew as an ingredient in food, there will be a recipe competition - `Swad Kaju Ka' - for housewives in Bangalore.

Apart from promoting cashew consumption, the festival will also highlight the role of cashew industry in socio-economic development of rural India. Mr Rao said that around 160 cashew-processing units in the State provide employment to over 40,000 women from weaker sections of society in coastal Karnataka.

While the country exported cashew kernel worth Rs 2,500 crore during 2004-05, Karnataka's share stood at Rs 250 crore. He said that the cashew industry in Karnataka has a promising future, as the production of raw cashewnut is likely to show rapid growth in the next five years.

A national-level buyer-seller meet has been proposed at the festival to strengthen the supply chain network of the industry and to understand the needs of consumers, he added.
