Project set to produce power by June

Turbines `3' and `4' were successfully tested in an idle mode.

New Delhi , April 2

With two units of the Asia's largest Tehri Dam successfully tested recently, power generation at the hydro-power project could begin as early June first week.

Turbines number 3 and 4 of the Tehri Dam were rolled in the presence of senior Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) officials and engineers from Russia and Germany, according to a company official.

Out of four turbines in the dam, Turbines `3' and `4' were successfully tested in an idle mode.

The remaining two would also be tested next week, depending on the availability of the required water level, THDC officials said.

Power production is likely to begin in the last week of May or in the first week of June, officials said, adding that in the first phase, 1000 MW electricity would be generated.

The 1000 MW Tehri Stage-I is a part of the 2400 MW Tehri Hydro Power Complex comprising the 1000 MW Tehri Stage-I, 400 MW Koteshwar Hydro Electric Project, which is also under implementation and 1000 MW Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (Tehri PSP) which is planned to be taken up for implementation shortly. The 1000 MW Tehri first stage comprises a 260.5 m high Tehri Dam, which is the highest earth and rockfill dam in Asia, four `Head Race' tunnels, an underground hydro power house having four conventional turbine/generator sets of 250 MW each and a complex spillway system. The Tehri Stage-I will produce 1000 MW of peaking power for the Northern Grid, with an annual generation of 3,568 MU. Uttaranchal will be entitled to 12 per cent free power from the project.
