Economy States - Kerala Ernakulam dist tops in revenue collection Our Bureau
Kochi , April 2 The annual revenue mobilisation in Ernakulam district in the just concluded fiscal ending March 31 has achieved a record collection Rs 4,900 crore against Rs 4,777 crore registered in 2004-05. The amount is the highest ever achieved by any of the districts in the State so far in a financial year. The District Collector, Mr A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, said that the target set by the district administration for the fiscal 2005-06 was Rs 5,000 crore. However, this could not be achieved due to various factors such as decrease in tax rates of rubber, introduction of VAT, winding up of some of the projects under the National Savings Schemes etc. Moreover, the local body elections in September and preparations for the Assembly polls had disrupted the mobilisation drive, he said. The revenue recovery for 2005-06 was Rs 70 crore against the Rs 60.52 crore collected last year. He pointed out that the revenue collection in all taluks had increased compared to the amount collected in 2004-05.
TALUK COLLECTIONS
Of the taluks in the district, Kanayannur Taluk office came first in collection of land revenue and revenue arrears. The taluk officials collected Rs 7.75 crore as land revenue and Rs 21.5 crore as revenue arrears. Various other taluk offices collected Rs 15.5 crore as revenue arrears during the month of March. The Commercial Taxes Department came firs t in revenue collection. The gross collection was Rs 3,755 crore against Rs 3,698 crore in 2004-05. The Divisional Forest Departments in Ernakulam district had also helped in increasing the revenue collections. Despite setting a target of Rs 28 crore, the offices under the Forest Department collected Rs 29 crore. The National Savings Scheme made a collection of only Rs 540 crore. However, it had a record collection of Rs 610 crore last year.
