Bangalore , April 3

Andhra Pradesh, after several years, made a fresh attempt on Monday to attract investments from Bangalore-based IT and semi-conductor companies to the State capital Hyderabad.

The AP Chief Minister, Mr Y.S. Rajashekhar Reddy, addressed the IT industry captains in Bangalore making an aggressive pitch for them to invest in the State.

The infrastructure in his State, Mr Reddy said, was better than any other State in the country, but refrained from making any critical reference to Bangalore, about which IT and biotech industries have been complaining as having poor infrastructure.

Mr Reddy's effort to woo the IT industry in Bangalore comes after a lag of several years.

Mr Reddy's predecessor Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu had made attempts to woo the industry, which resulted in a kind of one-upmanship between the two cities.

Monday's event was organised by APINVEST, the nodal agency to promote investments in the State.

Promises galore

Promising the IT industry all kind of facilities at an affordable cost, Mr Reddy said some of the industry leaders had informed him that his Government's decision-making was faster compared to other States.

Mr Reddy said his Government not only laid emphasis on software industries but was keen on promoting the hardware industries too.

"In a couple of years, the growth of hardware and semi-conductor sectors in AP will catch up with that of China as we are providing better opportunities than any other State in the country." he said.

He added that the growth of IT and ITeS sectors in AP during the last couple of years was over 60 per cent.

Andhra Pradesh, Mr Reddy said, was also developing tier-II cities and towns in the State, besides Hyderabad.

Mr C.S. Rao, CEO of APINVEST, said the State was put on fast track for providing infrastructure and other logistic facilities to attract the IT, biotech and semiconductor industries.

AP, with a 7.55 per cent growth rate, is expected to register an impressive export of over $15 billion by 2009.

The potential of the semi-conductor industry would be around $200 billion in the next 10 years, which will contribute over 12 per cent of the GDP.

Mr Rao said several Bangalore-based companies were keen on investing in Hyderabad.

However, he declined to name them.

Bangalore-based companies such as Sonata Software and Aztec Software have already invested in Hyderabad and majors such as Infosys had recently expressed its intent to invest in the city.
