An additional detention charge at Rs 100 and Rs 50 will be given to drivers and cleaners respectively, for delay in pre-stage area beyond 5 hours.
The service benefit pact signed in 2003 for drivers and cleaners will be implemented in toto by all owners until next settlement is arrived at.

Kochi , April 4

The 8-day trailer crew strike at Kochi has inflicted a revenue loss of Rs 2 crore to India Gateway Terminal on account of total disruption of movement of cargo to and from the port.

Even though the strike was called off on Monday evening, the movement of containers had commenced only on Tuesday morning.

Senior officials in the IGT said that an estimated 3,700 teus of imported cargo were stranded in the terminal due to the strike. However, the officials said that they have initiated steps simultaneously for both the delivery of import cargo as well as to receive cargo meant for exports.

Wage hikes

Meanwhile, a press release from the port said that the Cochin Container Carrier Owners Welfare Association (CCCOWA) has agreed in-principle to increase the wages and remuneration to the trailer drivers and cleaners at the conciliation meeting convened by the Regional Joint Labour Commissioner. An additional detention charge at the rate of Rs 100 and Rs 50 will be given to drivers and cleaners respectively, for delay in pre-stage area beyond 5 hours. The agreement arrived at in 2003 in respect of service benefits for drivers and cleaners, which are valid up to 2005, will be implemented in toto by all owners until next settlement is arrived at. The CCCOWA has also agreed for an interim relief. But the amount of interim relief will be announced after further discussion with all trade unions on Thursday.

Other details of the wage increase and service conditions will be discussed and finalised in consultation with all unions within 20 working days.

The association also clarified that there would not be any vindictive action against the workers involved in the strike.
