Bengal gets Rs 51 cr more as VAT compensation

, The Finance Ministry has disbursed an amount of Rs 51 crore to West Bengal towards compensation for the shortfall in revenue collections arising from State-level VAT implementation.

The Centre had earlier disbursed Rs 88.07 crore to West Bengal as VAT compensation. With the payment of Rs 51 crore, West Bengal has received about Rs 139 crore as VAT compensation during fiscal 2005-06.

Taken together with a sum of Rs 2,414 crore already disbursed, the Centre has so far incurred an expenditure of Rs 2,465 crore towards compensation to eight States for the fiscal year 2005-06.

So far, thirty States and Union Territories have implemented State-level VAT.
