Bangalore, April 5

Tokyo-based Elpida Memory Inc has entered into a joint venture with Singapore-based Future Techno Designs (FTD) to set up a design centre in the city. The new entity, Edison Semiconductor, will be wholly owned by FTD but will deliver chip designs, catering to Elpida's requirements for the global DRAM market. Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) chips are used in servers, mobile phones, digital cameras and PCs. The global DRAM market is $30 billion and is growing at 30-40 per cent. The focus of R&D is on low-power commodity DRAM chip design for use in PC motherboards, said Mr N. Ramakrishnan, President, FTD India. FTD will invest $25 million over a three-year period, and will grow from a 10- member team to 170 by then, said Mr P. Bala, Chief Executive Officer, FTD Technology Pte, Singapore. FTD's revenues for the year 2005 was Singapore $18 million.
