Mumbai , April 6

At the international conference on soya foods to discuss challenges and opportunities, a special interactive session has been scheduled with Mr Subodh Kant Sahai, Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, organisers said.

The two-day meet beginning on Friday in New Delhi is expected to bring together stakeholders of the soya sector, including scientists, technologists and marketing experts to examine in-depth emerging market opportunities in the country.

Variety of subjects

Experts from India and abroad are slated to speak on a variety of subjects including global and Indian scenario, nutritional and health benefits, new products and technologies, role of soya in nutraceutical products as also food handling and marketing.

The event is organised by Soya Food Promotion and Welfare Association, American Soybean Association, US Soybean Export Council and Soyabean Processors Association of India.

With annual output of about 65-70 lakh tonnes, India is the world's fifth largest producer of soyabean, a protein-rich legume. The country exports about 30 lakh tonnes of soybean extraction and imports close to 20 lakh tonnes of soyaoil. Recently, the Government issued a draft notification seeking to impose labelling restriction on genetically modified food including soyabean oil.
