A day's halt in Gangavaram project work

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , April 6

The construction work at Gangavaram port was stopped for a day on Thursday in memory of the fisherman who was killed in police firing last week.

The decision was taken on Wednesday after talks held by the Commercial Taxes Minister, Mr K. Ramakrishna, with representatives of different political parties and the agitators ended on an inconclusive note.

The fishermen and their representatives expressed dissatisfaction with the Minister's statement and demanded a halt in the port work until the issues were resolved.

There has been no headway in talks on the crucial issue of where the fishing jetty should be located or the rehabilitation package. Further talks will be held on Saturday.

The fishermen of Gangavaram have been demanding construction of a fishing jetty in the vicinity of the village and a comprehensive rehabilitation package.
