`Open higher education to pvt sector'
Our Bureau
New Delhi, April 6
In order to increase skilled manpower and create more jobs, the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry feels that the higher education sector needs to be opened for private sector participation.
The chamber is of the view that at least 80 per cent of the students in the country should be provided technical and vocational education to make them better equipped to find jobs. The liberalisation of the economy prompted more students to go abroad for higher education, according to the chamber. Though the number of universities increased from 18 at the time of independence to 306 now, the per capita total Government expenditure on higher education in the country still remains a small fraction of $1,400 that the US spends, it said. The chamber further argues that more than one lakh Indian students go to foreign countries for higher education every year compared to just 6,000 foreign students coming to India for the purpose.
