The sudden drop in availability of power in the Southern grid region has caused temporary power supply problems in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
Tripping in the naphtha-based Kayankulam power plant and one of the 500 MW units at Talcher, have resulted in a shortage of 1300 MW supply to these States.
Andhra Pradesh, which loses 120 MW supply due to the problem in Kayankulam, has resorted to higher drawals from the hydro units at Srisailam power station and hopes to tide over the crisis, according to official sources.
In view of the present crisis, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have expressed their inability to supply power to Andhra Pradesh.
The present situation in the State came for review by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the power utilities.
While early recovery of these units was expected, the interim period could mean that the APTransco and discoms may have to resort to increased power cuts for domestic and rural areas.
The State is exploring options to seek additional power from West Bengal and other generating stations to tide over the problems, if they extend, source said.
The energy demand has shot up to 170 million units as against 147.1 mu on the same day last year.
