Eastern Railway freight traffic up 10.5 pc

Coal accounted for the bulk of traffic throughput

Kolkata , April 7

The Eastern Railway (ER) has handled 46.95 million tonnes (mt) of freight traffic in 2005-06 as compared to 42.5 mt in 2004-05, registering 10.47 per cent growth.

Coal accounted for the bulk of the traffic throughput, as much as 35.20 mt (31.07 mt), followed by stone 7.5 mt (7.5 mt).

In terms of other parameters, the performance of ER, according to sources, was good during the period under review. Thus the average daily loading of wagons (in terms of four-wheeler units) increased to 5,226 (4,860) while the average wagon holding dropped to 34,185 (37,278).

In other words, there was more loading with fewer wagons.

The average daily interchange of wagons increased to 13,659 (13,357) thus posting 2.26 per cent improvement while the number of loaded wagons received per day increased to 5,127 (4,956), or a growth of 3.45 per cent, add ER sources.
