Global film cos warm up to Indian industry

Mumbai , April 7

Indian film industry is attracting international film production companies.

Paramount is the latest among the leading international companies to enter this sector in India.

Paramount, a Viacom company, would co-produce films in India, Mr Tom Preston, President and Chief Executive Officer, Viacom, said at FICCI-Frames 2006, the three- day annual convention on media and entertainment.

India, Mr Preston, said was high on priority list for Viacom.

Walt Disney has also evinced interest in entering into production of Hindi films as well as the animation segment.

Sony Pictures Releasing of India Ltd had announced earlier that it plans to collaborate with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali to co-produce Sony's first Indian film, Saawariya (Beloved), in Hindi.

"India has a rich and a prolific film history. We at Sony Pictures recognise the potential and importance of the Indian market," Sony had said in a news release then quoting Mr Michael Lynton, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Pictures.

Mr Ashok Amritraj had also announced at FICCI-Frames 2006 that his company, Hyde Park Entertainment, would co-produce a film in India. "We also hope to have a joint venture with an Indian animation company," he had said.

India and UK have entered into a co-production treaty to make films. In the first year 10 films would be made, officials said.

Many other global co-productions with Indian participation are under way.
