Bird flu: AP Govt to study relief package

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , April 7

The Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to study relief packages offered by Karnataka and Maharashtra to poultry farmers who were hit by the bird flu crisis.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has directed the officials of Animal Husbandry Department to study the relief packages and get back to the Government.

Responding to the demands made by an all-party delegation here on Friday, he said a massive awareness campaign was needed to educate people on issues related to bird flu.

He also highlighted the need to educate people on the disease Chikun Gunya.

"The name of the disease is misleading. It has got nothing to do either with chicken or poultry industry," he said.

In a separate release, it said the Chief Minister asked officials to work with insurance companies to finalise modalities to offer insurance cover to 2.13 crore sheep population.

The proposed insurance scheme, slated to come into force from June 1, would benefit five lakh sheep farmers in the State.
