Gangavaram issue

Plans for resurvey
Mr Rao said the first survey by the district administration had itself listed 3,262 families, excluding the steel plant employees and others. However, it was pruned to 1,040 later and again to 1,533.

Visakhapatnam , April 7

The issue of constructing a fishing jetty near the Gangavaram village and the rehabilitation package can be settled without much difficulty and with no loss of time, if the Government is really sincere, according to Mr Narasinga Rao, District Secretary of CPI(M). The party is leading the agitation of the fishermen.

At a press meet here on Friday, Mr Rao said, "It can be sorted out across the table in a couple of days.

But the Government is postponing the issue by announcing that the feasibility of constructing a jetty at Nallamarammapatalu would be referred to a technical committee and that a resurvey conducted to ascertain the number of fishermen.''

He said the Government wanted the Department of Ports to give the technical report, while the fishermen and the Opposition parties wanted it done by the Department of Fisheries.

Enough room

``The jetty at Nallamarammapatalu will in no way affect the new port as it is located very far. There is enough room for setting up all the 32 berths, going by the map supplied by the port authority. Instead of laying a road at a cost of Rs 10 crore to Yarada making the fishermen travel all the way to the place, they can as well set up the jetty at Nallamarammapatalu at less than half the cost with all the facilities like solar drying,'' he suggested.

The relief and rehabilitation package should take into cognisance the occupational requirements of fishermen.

On the plans for a resurvey, he recalled that the first survey by the district administration had itself listed 3,262 families, excluding the steel plant employees and others.

However, it was pruned to 1,040 later and again to 1,533.

"We don't know how they arrived at these figures. But we asked them to prepare even a negative list so as to eliminate bogus entries if any. But they have not responded,'' he said.
