Modern macular centre set up in Hyderabad

Aimed at enhancing treatment opportunities for macular diseases and also at capacity building activities among the ophthalmology community with the latest knowledge and training, LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) and Novartis India have joined hands and built a modern macula centre here.
Macular degeneration is a condition of the eye that is often related to ageing, commonly referred to as age related macular degeneration (AMD). In AMD, the macula of the eye, located at the centre of the retina, is affected.
According to the LVPEI Director, Prof Ravi Thomas, AMD is the leading cause of legal, irreversible blindness among people of 50 years of age.
Studies showed that about 1.8 per cent of people above 40 years are likely to have some form of AMD. Stating that the scientific research and technological advancement today allow doctors to manage many such diseases to a treatable stage, the Novartis India Business Unit Head, Ophthalmics, Mr Mukul Bagga, said the modern equipment at the macula centre enabled evaluation and treatment of macular diseases.
