Move for 24-hour water supply in select cities in AP

Hyderabad , April 7

If plans of Andhra Pradesh Government go ahead well, people in 15 per cent of municipalities in the State could have access to round-the-clock water supply in the next three years.

Addressing Cityscapes-2006, the convention of urban infrastructure reforms with public-private linkages here on Friday, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said developing urban infrastructure was very important as migrations from rural areas continued.

Rural economies could not support ever increasing population and hence migration to urban areas.

"But we need to ensure that urban areas are not overcrowded. Or, there would be utter chaos," he said.

Developing Infrastructure

Stating that the Governments had realised the importance of developing urban infrastructure, he said his Government had taken up the 162-km Outer Ring Road around the State Capital.

He said `Fund your City' programme launched by the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad was a big hit. The programme envisaged support from corporates, NGOs and others in developing urban infrastructure.

"We are going to replicate it to smaller towns," he said.
