Southern Rly earnings rise

Chennai, April 8

Southern Railway earned Rs 2,675 crore for the year ended March 31, 2006 against Rs 2,365 crore in the previous year. Earnings from freight increased to Rs 1,041 crore (Rs 835 crore) on freight loading of 27.4 million tonnes (23.5 million tonnes). Passenger traffic increased to 511 million (463 million) and 1,074 special trains were run during 2005-06 compared to 1,608 in the previous fiscal, according to a Southern Railway press release.
