Roadways Industry & Economy - Foreign Trade Sino-Indian border trade
If the reports from China are to be believed, the country's trade with India by land route through Nathu La Pass in Sikkim should start from June. According to Xinhua, the Chinese news agency, a trade market on the strategic Sino-Indian border will open in June, thus establishing the first direct trade link between the two countries since 1962. The proposed market place, to be spread over an area of over 6,000 sq metres, is to open twice a week for four hours a day. The place, a meeting point of Yatung County of China's Tibet Autonomous Region and Sikkim, is about 16 km from Nathu La. The construction work on both sides of the border is believed to be in progress in full swing to meet the deadline. Historically, Nathu La Pass was on a major trade route linking Lhasa in Tibet with Kalimpong in India. Initially, there were no roads, only mule tracts. Some sort of road links were established in the last century when the trade volume picked up. However, the links were virtually snapped in 1962 when the trading was suspended following border dispute between the two countries.
