FIEO panel to draft roadmap on creating 2 m jobs

Our Bureau

Mangalore , April 9

The FIEO Committee on Agro Exports will draft a comprehensive road map to assist the Union Ministry of Commerce in achieving its target of creating two million additional jobs.

In a release, Mr Walter D'Souza, Convenor of the FIEO Committee on Agro Exports and AEZ, said: "We shall present the same at the meeting to be convened by the Ministry on `focus product' and `focus market' initiatives, and fine-tune the same before finalising the incentives to sector-specific exports."

He added that the target of achieving exports of the order of $120 billion in 2006-07 sounds logical, and given the right incentives is achievable.

However, generation of two million additional jobs vis-à-vis the 20 per cent growth in dollar terms is too ambitious without having a re-look at the same in key areas of agro exports.

Mr D'Souza said that he discussed this issue with the Union Commerce Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, soon after the release of the annual supplement to the Foreign Trade Policy on Friday.
