Steel States - Karnataka Australia lures Indian steel companies Prakash Kamat
Panaji , April 9 Australia has invited Indian companies to capitalise on its huge reserves of coking coal, a raw material essential for steel industry.Stating this Mr Ian McDonald, Minister of Natural Resources, New South Wales, Australia, said: "Our country has the reserves that can help India develop its steel industry and this resource security is the most important aspect." Mr McDonald was in India to inaugurate the third international conference of `Global Steel 2006' at Goa last week. Australia is looking to India for the latter's technological advancement in the information technology field, he said and added that trade-links can be furthered by laying stress on technology-based communication industry. Earlier, acknowledging the Australian presence at the conference, Mr A.K. Jagatramka, co-chairman of the conference, said in his speech, "Australian presence is important in view of the fact that India will have to increasingly look towards Australia to quench her ever-growing hunger for energy resources." The inaugural ceremony was attended by former New South Wales Premier, Mr Nevile Wran, the Australian High Commissioner to India, Mr John McCarthy, and the Goa Chief Secretary, Mr J.P. Singh. Organised by Steel RX Corporation, a part of the Gujarat NRE Coke group, the event was backed by the Ministry of Steel, Australian Trade Commission and various industry associates.
