He was inaugurating the first conference of traditional fishermen, organised by the Federation of Traditional Fishermen's Organisations of Coastal Karnataka, at Uchila in Udupi district on Saturday. Stating that the Government is committed to the welfare of fishermen and fisherwomen in the State, Mr Shetty said the Government would provide 10,000 houses for people in the fisheries sector under the `Matsyashraya' scheme. Apart from this, the Government will also encourage the formation of self-help groups among fisherwomen. On the demand of the federation to extend the fishing ban period by mechanised boats during monsoon from 58 days to 65 days, he said he would discuss this issue with the representatives of the federation and the Dakshina Kannada Mogaveera Mahasabha soon.
